The Appeal of an Animated TV Shows Such as The Simpsons

I have always wondered how I could start watching a television show at the age of 14 and continue until I am 33 with the same degree of enthusiasm for it that I had 19 years ago. That show is called The Simpsons, and it is really just one animated TV show of many that I truly enjoy watching.

When I first started watching The Simpsons, I had a difficult time convincing my father that it was appropriate viewing for a young teenager. It is an animated TV show, but it can be quite risqué and irreverent at times, and he was not certain that it was the kind of show he wanted me to watch. Once he started watching a few episodes, however, he was the one that we had to pull away from the television to eat dinner.

Besides the fact that it is one of the most cleverly written shows of all time, it has a very good message in most episodes and seems to be fresh year after year. One of the things I like most about the show is that it has a broad appeal. People of all ages seem to like it, and it is something that almost everyone can enjoy.

Another animated TV show that I really enjoy is The Family Guy. This is a show that obviously is not for everybody, but again, I find that I cannot pull myself away from it whenever it is on, and that even goes for reruns that I have seen dozens of times.

I also really enjoy South Park and can tolerate King of the Hill. South Park is one of the few shows where I routinely find myself laughing until my sides are about to split.

Sometimes I wonder what it is about animated TV shows that many of us find so appealing. I think it is a couple of things. First, as adults, we want to be entertained, but challenged at the same time. Shows like The Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy do just that.

I also think for many of us, watching an animated TV show is like taking a trip down memory lane back to our childhoods. We get to watch what are essentially glorified and more sophisticated cartoons, laughing and having a good time with our family. It is a lot like Saturday mornings when were children, where we can sort of forget about things for a while and have some fun.

I have a number of TV shows that I like to watch these days, and most of them are crime dramas or sitcoms, but the animated TV show will always hold a special place in my heart. The way I know they are unique to me is that I always have a different kind of feeling on the nights that they are on, and know for a fact that I will be in a better mood when the show is over than I was before it started.
